Why “Tetelestai”?

The Greek word Tetelestai (τετέλεσται) translates into English as “It is finished." This was the final word spoken by Jesus from the cross (John 19:30), and it holds deep theological significance. The root verb teleō means “to complete, accomplish, finish.” In saying “Tetelestai,” Jesus declared that the work He came to do—redeeming humanity, fulfilling Scripture, satisfying God’s justice—was accomplished.

Because the word is in the perfect tense in Greek, it doesn’t merely mean “It was finished.” It carries the idea that the work was completed in the past, continues to have effect in the present, and remains finished forever.
